On a gas furnace this usually means the burners are not staying lit. A dirty flame sensor is the single most common cause — it stops detecting flame, and the control board shuts the gas off within seconds as a safety measure. A failed igniter produces the same complaint, as does a fault on the gas supply side.
On a heat pump, cooler air on a cold morning is frequently a defrost cycle rather than a fault, which is why an accurate diagnosis matters before anyone starts replacing parts.

Sound is diagnostic. A rhythmic squeal usually points to the blower motor or its bearings. A rumble or boom on ignition can indicate delayed ignition, which is worth attention rather than tolerance. Ignitor Replacement
The hot surface ignitor glows red to light the burners. They are consumable by design and typically fail after several years of cycling — often without warning, and usually on the coldest night of the season. Symptom: the inducer runs, you hear the sequence begin, but the burners never light. Replaced as a matched part.
Flame Sensor Cleaning & Replacement
A thin metal rod that confirms flame is actually present. When it gets coated in residue it stops sensing, and the board shuts the gas off within seconds as a safety response. Symptom: burners light, then go out a few seconds later, repeatedly. The single most common heating call we take, and frequently a cleaning rather than a replacement.
Gas Valve Replacement
Controls gas flow to the burners. Failures are less common than ignition components but more consequential, since the valve is a primary safety device. Symptom: no gas reaching the burners despite a correct ignition sequence, or a valve that fails to close properly. Always replaced rather than repaired, and never a part to attempt yourself.
Furnace Control Board Repair & Replacement
The circuit board that sequences everything — inducer, ignitor, gas valve, blower — in the correct order with the correct delays. Symptom: erratic behaviour, stages firing out of sequence, or a system that will not respond at all. Most modern boards flash a diagnostic code that tells us a great deal before anything is opened up.
Limit Switch Replacement
A safety device that shuts the burners down if the heat exchanger gets too hot. Symptom: the furnace runs, then shuts off on a repeating cycle. Worth knowing: a tripping limit switch is usually doing its job correctly in response to restricted airflow, so the real fix is often a filter or duct problem rather than the switch itself.
Pressure Switch Replacement
Confirms the draft inducer is moving exhaust safely out of the home before allowing ignition. Symptom: the inducer runs but ignition never follows. As with the limit switch, a pressure switch fault is often reporting a genuine problem — a blocked flue or a cracked hose — rather than being the failure itself.
Draft Inducer Motor Repair & Replacement
The small motor that clears the combustion chamber and pulls exhaust out through the flue before the burners light. Symptom: a rattling or grinding noise at the start of the heating cycle, or a system that stalls before ignition. Bearings are the usual failure point, and the noise typically gives weeks of warning.
Blower Motor Repair & Replacement
Moves heated air through the ductwork and into the home. Symptom: no airflow at the vents despite the burners firing, a loud squeal, or a motor that hums without turning. Often it is the capacitor rather than the motor, which is a smaller repair — worth confirming before agreeing to a motor replacement.

Electric Furnace Repair
Common in condos, townhomes, and homes with no gas line. The failure profile is almost entirely electrical: heating elements, sequencers that stage those elements, contactors, transformers, and blower motors.
These systems are regularly misdiagnosed by technicians who mostly work on gas equipment, because the symptoms look similar while the causes are not.
Heat Pump Repair
One system doing both heating and cooling, with faults that can appear in either mode. Reversing valves, defrost boards, auxiliary heat strips, capacitors, and refrigerant-side problems all present differently from furnace faults.

When It Is A Safety Issue, Not A Repair

If a carbon monoxide detector sounds: get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911. Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, and a cracked heat exchanger — the most common source from a furnace — is not visible without inspection. Symptoms worth taking seriously are headaches, nausea, dizziness, or drowsiness that improve when you leave the house.
Working CO detectors on every level of the home are not optional if you heat with gas. They have a service life of five to ten years, and they are the only warning you will get.

Plenty of systems we are called out to replace turn out to be a repairable fault instead — that is the whole point of diagnosing before quoting. But repair is not always the right answer, and pretending otherwise costs you more over the following two winters than being told plainly.
